Went to the shooting range today, the last time for 2013. This year has really been bad for me as far as shooting. I've only gone a few times and haven't practiced with my carry gun nearly enough. All I can do is try to do better in 2014!

AR Build

Just a few days ago I built another AR-15 rifle in 5.56. When I say "built" I mean I pinned a completed lower assembly to a completed upper assembly, which was the total amount of my effort involved in the project. Before the last presidential election when complete AR-15 lowers were both cheap and plentiful I purchased two from S&W to put away for a rainy day. I planned to build one last spring but after the feeding frenzy earlier this year I gave up and just stopped looking for a while. About a month ago I began my search for a complete upper again and finally found one at a price I could live with. Like my last one this carbine has a S&W lower and a Bushmaster upper. This time though I went with the A3 "Dissipator" model and I'm quite happy I did. I have decided to keep this project simple. I'm going to put a red dot sight on it (and maybe a flashlight) and that will be it. Updates to follow.

Gone Shooting

I went shooting on some private property yesterday. The weather was perfect, dry and 70 degrees. I have several guns that I need to shoot for various reasons but have been putting it off for months now. Yesterday I took my two Ruger Mark II pistols. The Government target model I've had for a while. It is a wonderful target pistol, exceptionally accurate but will still shoot anything you feed it. The Standard model is a 50th Anniversary gun I inherited from my dad. It had never been shot and I needed to try it out. The Ruger MKII has to be one of the finest semi-auto .22 pistols ever made. I've never had a problem with one and yesterday was no different. Mark II pistols are still reasonably priced right now but it's a good bet their value will only be going up since they're not made like this anymore.

Book Review - Wolverines: Reflections on Red Dawn

Wolverines: Reflections on Red Dawn by Ryan Lewellin is a collection of essays about the 1984 version of Red Dawn and is more for true fans of the film. It is a short book and available through Kindle only. I found it to be entertaining and certainly worth the 2.99 asking price. In my opinion any author that can tie this film with The Bible, On Guerrilla Warfare by Mao Zedong and Afghanistan's problems (both past and present) is worth at least a look.

Gone Shooting

It was an absolutely miserable day to go shooting but I went this morning anyway. I guess I just like to punish myself. It has been raining here off and on for several days and the mud was deep, the humidity was awful too. But, as I've mentioned several times before on this blog I have quite a few guns I need to shoot. I would like to finally get the job done. I didn't shoot much from late '11 thru most of 2012 and got behind. I also inherited some guns from my dad which didn't help the problem either.

Today I took a 1959 Winchester Model 88 (.308) that I got from Dad. He had a modern fixed 4X scope mounted on it. The scope was alright but I thought a vintage Weaver 2.5 X 7 variable I had was a much better fit for this classic Winchester.

The gun shop bore sight it for me and then I did the rest myself. I didn't really do much shooting though as I forgot my spotting scope and since the Remington 165 gr hunting loads I was using are almost $1 apiece I didn't feel like wasting many. I was able to get the rifle on paper at 100 yards. Later this year, when the weather is more comfortable, I'll finish the job.

Book Review - A Failure of Civility

The book's title, A Failure of Civility: How to defend and protect you, your family, friends, neighborhood, and America during a disaster or crisis, describes the subject matter within quite well. I must say that this is one of the more informative books I have read on this topic. The authors (Garand & Lawson) tackle many complicated subjects yet are still able to explain them in simple terms that any layman would understand. They offer many practical solutions to problems we will all have if things go bad. I am giving this book my highest recommendation. If you are concerned about the future of this country and your community, and your own family's survival, buy this book and read it, now.

Book Review - Defensive Use of Firearms

Defensive Use of Firearms is a short book on self-defense by Stephen P. Wenger. To be honest a large portion of it concerns standard topics that can be found in any number of books of this type, mindset, tactics, equipment, legal issues, etc. His advice is sound, no doubt, and consists mostly of common sense measures that will help you be better prepared for a life threatening encounter. If you have read other self-defense books I am sure you will be familiar with most of the topics within.

One area where Mr. Wenger does depart from the norm is with regards to shot placement. Most self-defense instructors teach their students to target the upper torso in an attempt to hit a vital organ, lungs, heart, major arteries, or if you're real lucky the head or central nervous system. It is the predominant view these days and it has become almost a religious doctrine, not to be questioned. Mr. Wenger does question it though. He believes that your best chance at stopping an attack is to target the pelvic region, specifically to damage the bones and joints there that will immediately bring an attacker down. He certainly isn't the first to advance this view. I doubt he will be the last either because the idea has merit.

I am recommending this book. Even if you don't agree with all of Mr. Wenger's theories I think this book might still help you, if for no other reason than to make you defend what you believe about your self-defense tactics, and why you believe it.

Product Review - Land Shark Leather

Yesterday I received in the mail a new holster for my Browning Hi Power. I was so impressed I thought to review it here. The holster was made by Land Shark Leather and is exceptionally done. Rob runs Land Shark Leather as a one man operation. He makes no claim that his holsters are better than the competition but that he produces a "quality product at a reasonable price." I wholeheartedly agree. I have bought a lot of holsters and seen many more over the last 20+ years. Rob's holsters are top notch and well worth the modest prices he is asking. I ordered his "Tiger Shark" model and couldn't be happier with it. It's made of premium cowhide and precisely molded for the gun. My Browning is a perfect fit. The workmanship is outstanding and extra features like the body shield are a nice touch too. Gone Shooting

I went to the shooting range this morning. The weather was cool and the sky overcast. All in all, a nice day to go to the range.

Today I took .45 pistols again, like most every time so far this year. Once more I brought my main carry gun, the Colt. I try and take at least one of my carry guns with me whenever I go, even only putting a magazine or two through it is better than nothing.

I also brought my .45 USP. It's my house gun and it occurred to me that although I've shot it numerous times I have never fired it with the flashlight attached, like it sits next to my bed.

Both guns ran flawlessly. The USP even gulped down some old semi-wadcutter target loads I had on hand. The USP has never failed me once. Not through thousands of rounds of different bullet types, ages and manufacturers. It is one of the most reliable pistols I have ever owned.

But the main purpose of the day was seeing if the HK's attached flashlight affected the gun's performance in any way. I couldn't distinguish any significant difference. The gun balance has been changed slightly but accuracy and reliability were the same. Having more weight under the barrel might have marginally reduced felt recoil but to be honest the HK is very manageable to begin with. It's hard to tell if there really was an appreciable difference.

But it was a good morning shooting anyway.

Does your local shooting range have its own reality show? Mine does. I've been going there for over twenty years now and I can't say there's much "reality" in the program. Or at least none I've ever witnessed. But it's not too bad. If you keep your expectations low, if seeing things shot and blown up will make you happy, you might just like it. HERE is the premiere episode.

One thing that could save us (that will never happen)

Since it's April the 15th once more and I just finished writing a big check to the FEDs I thought I would mention again my theory on paying taxes by payroll deduction. If we could somehow change it back to where every taxpayer had to pay their taxes at the end of the year as one big check we could turn this country around. Once the average American could see right in front of their eyes the actual, total amount being taken from them and squandered away by our "representatives" we would have major reform in this country, if not bloody revolution. Unfortunately, that is never going to happen, it is here to stay. Whoever thought up automatic payroll tax deductions was an evil genius; I'm talking James Bond level evil genius. HERE are some more interesting tax tidbits for you to nibble on. Have a happy tax day!

Today is also Buy A Gun day but since I've bought two revolvers and a .45 already this year I felt that was enough. If you've bought a gun recently I would be glad to hear about it though.

Pistolero

Earlier this year, while everyone was scrambling to find ARs and magazines, I stayed on the sidelines. I did spend some more on SCAR mags but otherwise sat this current madness out. I have nearly everything that I need so I wasn't looking for much. I did find this little gem at a great price back in February. I couldn't turn it down.

It's a 1931 vintage Colt Detective Model in .38 Special. I don't know its history but some past owner knew their guns, and knew exactly what they wanted in a carry gun.

The hammer spur has been removed so it won't snag on clothing but the top of the hammer has been checkered so you can still cock it single action if you want to. Originally this revolver had a square butt grip but the back has been rounded into an almost bird's head shape. The bottom halves of the grips have also been ground down. When new they flared out at the bottom now they gently roll back towards the frame. They feel great in your hand. Of course the action is smooth a silk.

I think in the next few months I'll have to get out all my old .38s and make a day of it.

Joshua news

Well, it has been one year since my first novel Joshua was published. To date it has sold 6,641 copies, several hundred more were borrowed from Amazon's lending library, and 24,783 given away free during a recent 5 day promotion!

On Kindle it went to the number one position in Men's Adventure category and the top ten in Action & Adventure. Now, after my recent promotion it is back in the charts again and currently has a 4.3 star rating (out of 5) on Amazon.

All in all, not bad for a story that nearly didn't get started.

I had the initial concept for Joshua several years ago. I thought it was a great idea but never really got past the "working on it in my head" stage. I never wrote anything, except for some websites and blogs, what did I know about writing fiction? I kicked the idea around awhile but it remained inside me, unfinished. I didn't think it could get worse but it did. Later on I found that my idea was similar to a very famous book, although somehow I had managed to never hear about it. At that point Joshua nearly died, I knew it would be considered by some a "rip-off" of it, or at least unfairly compared to it.

Eventually, in the summer of '10 I decided to just do it. I sat down at my computer one day and began. The idea I had in my head for so long had to come out. From the first I thought what I was writing was good, but what did I know? Maybe I was deluding myself. After a while I scrounged up enough courage to post it on my site as a serial. Honestly I was quite nervous; I didn't know what was going to happen. I was halfway expecting readers demand that I pull my story because it was stinking up the internetz.

But the opposite happened. Readers started telling me it was good. They said write more! Finally, with enough encouragement I thought that maybe this could eventually be a "real" book. I started working towards that goal.

Now here I am a year later. My second novel has just been published and I am about to start a third. All because of a simple little idea that kept nagging at my mind and some good people that encouraged me to finish it. Thanks.

Gone Shooting - Déjà vu

I went down to my local shooting range this morning (sorry, no photos). Just like last time the only gun I took was my Colt Government Model. Also, just like last time, the weather was cold and dreary. At least it wasn't wet today. I can't wait for spring (weather) to finally get here.

Principles Of Personal Defense

Today I read Colonel Cooper's classic for the umpteenth time. It is a short book, booklet really, but it is essential reading for all of us determined to defend ourselves from violent predators. Although it's forty years old now the advice contained within is timeless. Everyone should read this and reread it every so often too, to keep it fresh in your mind.

Gone Shooting

Yesterday was a cold, wet, dreary day, but I went shooting anyway. One of my New Year's resolutions was to go shooting at least once every month in 2013; I'm doing my best to keep it.

The only gun I took was my main carry gun, my 1953 Colt Government Model. I didn't want to go trampling through the mud much so all shooting was done at one target at 10 yds. Once I filled that target with holes that was enough for the day. As usual the pistol was 100% reliable.

But I really did need to test this gun again and that's another reason I went yesterday. Recently I had new sights installed and I wanted to see if the point of aim changed. It does shoot slightly higher than it did but not enough to worry about. I had a Novak gold bead front and a Harrison Design Retro rear sight installed. I really like the sight picture of the new sights and my old eyes can easily pick up that gold front dot, even in low light.

I actually have several guns that need to be shot, either for the first time, or like this Colt, to recheck them. This spring is going to be real busy of me!

Color Dragnet was one of my favorite TV shows growing up, ever! I could (and still can) watch reruns of it over and over again. For me there was just something mesmerizing about unwavering 1950s police detective Joe Friday fighting crime with a psychedelic 1960s L.A. as the backdrop. The Hippies and the Squares, the old vs. the new, a city at war with itself, and one dedicated cop caught in the middle of it all. It was epic.

Things to do ...

Here are some of the things I'm doing with my money in 2013 and I suggest you do too.

What I won't be doing - SAVING - your money will soon be worth much less and eventually will be worth nothing. Don't bother saving it. Yes, have a bit of cash on hand for the short term emergences, but "invest" the rest in real goods. Putting it away in savings is a fool's game.

What I will be using my money for this year ...

1) Paying off debt.

2) Investing in food - you can buy a ten pound bag of rice for $8 right now or the same amount of beans for only a few dollars more. You can easily feed yourself for $40 a month, or less than that if you willing to grind your own wheat. It is boring to live on, no doubt, but will keep you alive and at a low cost. You should also buy other foods as supplements though, flour, pastas, sauces, canned meats, vegetables and fruits, will break up the monotony of your basic diet. There are any number of things that are still relatively inexpensive and can be stored away for a long time. Buy now before prices skyrocket.

3) Investing in lead - ammunition - buy as much as you can when you can. Some might even consider buying ammo for guns they don't have but I advise to just stay with calibers you can use yourself.

4) Investing in silver - I like "junk silver" and when I buy spend most of my money on Mercury dimes or Walking Liberty and/or Franklin half dollars. They are small in size and good for lesser purchases. Unlike newer Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes the aforementioned coins were only available in silver and are easily recognized as such even by people that know little about the subject.

5) Investing in steel - guns - even now with the current mania it still is possible to find bargains. There are many affordable guns out there that are not the "newest bestest thing," keep your eyes open for quality guns at reasonable prices. Buy now to sell or barter with later, or you might have to give one to a friend in need. Although any gun might do, personally I would concentrate on common calibers, "hunting" or "militia" type rifles and handguns good for self-defense or concealed carry being the best choices. Quality .22LR handguns and long guns will always have a market too. For me I would much rather spend my extra money on this than on the 1% interest (if you're lucky) you're going to get on your savings account.

If I know my regular readers this is all old news to them, or at least I hope it is. For those of you already doing these things, keep them up. For those that haven't really started, get going, time is running short!

Gone Shooting - Drink the Kool-Aid!

Well it took six weeks but I finally got to take my SCAR 17S to the range. We've had wet weather the last three times I wanted to go shooting. It was still a little wet today from some snow two days ago, but dry enough. I couldn't wait any longer. I have several guns that I need to shoot but the SCAR was the only one that went. I had to know if it was a 'Keeper' or not. I won't keep you in suspense, it most definitely is!

This morning I ran a mix of various 7.62 NATO through the rifle. I brought along some 1980s British surplus. As well as some 1990s German surplus and Cavim. From my newer stock I brought Winchester and Prvi Partisan brands. I fired 180 rounds without a single malfunction. The rifle performed flawlessly right from round one.

Today I used the factory iron sights at a distance of 50 meters and firing from a rest. Once I got used to the sights I could easily keep my shots in a 5 inch square even when I picked up the pace some. Numerous times shots were less than an inch apart, which brings us to the only flaw in the SCAR, the trigger. According to my trigger scale mine comes in at a gritty 7.5 pounds. I believe this rifle would easily be capable of sub MOA accuracy with a better trigger. That is the next thing on my list.

The muzzle brake tames the rifle quite a bit but does make it LOUD. When I got to the range the only shooters there were two elderly gentlemen at the far end puttering around with their .22s. I purposely went to the opposite side putting as much distance as I could between us (about 50 feet). It didn't help much though, after about 40 rounds through the SCAR they packed up and went home. Sorry guys!

Now that I have actually shot the SCAR I can say that all the accolades are true. It is light weight and easy to control, despite the heavy cartridge it fires it is a ball to shoot. This rifle is everything its proponents say it is, and now you can count me as one of them. I am another true believer!
