Apocalyptic Reminder

Because of a storm that tore through I just went 18 hours without electricity. That's good though; you need to be reminded occasionally that the world is going to suck after the lights go out.

One thing that could save us (that will never happen)

Since it's April the 15th once more and I just finished writing a big check to the FEDs I thought I would mention again my theory on paying taxes by payroll deduction. If we could somehow change it back to where every taxpayer had to pay their taxes at the end of the year as one big check we could turn this country around. Once the average American could see right in front of their eyes the actual, total amount being taken from them and squandered away by our "representatives" we would have major reform in this country, if not bloody revolution. Unfortunately, that is never going to happen, it is here to stay. Whoever thought up automatic payroll tax deductions was an evil genius; I'm talking James Bond level evil genius. HERE are some more interesting tax tidbits for you to nibble on. Have a happy tax day!

2012 - Bittersweet

Another year is gone and 2012 was full of highs and lows for me. It started off bad when Dad passed away. I spent most of the earlier part of this year in a depressed haze. Looking back at my posts for 2012 I honestly don't remember making many of those in the first half of the year. It was a long dark tunnel but finally I saw some light about halfway through the summer. Obama's re-election was also a low point. I never was a Romney fan but even he was a preferable alternative to who we have in office. I had no delusions that Romney was going to save this country but I thought that maybe he could slow this train some before it came off the rails. I must admit that the election shook me up quite a bit. I just can't look at my country and its future, or American voters in general, in the same light again.

But 2012 had some bright spots too. My book being my personal one. I never thought my self-published novel would make me a millionaire. My only hope was that it would earn its money back, if it made a little profit that would be a pleasant surprise. To date my book sales has far surpassed all my expectations. I've sold over 5,000 copies to date. It also gave me a hope I didn't dare dream but now looks like it could be possible one day, being able to support myself doing the thing I love, writing. My book also introduced me to a new pastime for writers that I had no idea existed until I published my own, checking my Amazon book sales stats eleven-gazillion times each day!

For 2013 I have another book coming out. If it sells as well as my first book I might fulfill another dream I've had for a while, buying me some acreage out in the country somewhere.

Other than that I see 2013 as a continuation of 2012 for me, saving, paying off bills, and preparing for an unknown future. Just trying to hang on and praying the world does too. For all the readers of wilsonblog, I hope you reach your personal goals next year and have a great 2013!

Not for sale

I've been sitting here looking at my SCAR 17S rifle. It's hard to believe that they are now selling for nearly triple what I paid for mine less than a month ago. The magazines are going for four times what I paid just two weeks ago. I guess timing is everything. All this panic buying and general insanity over an 'Assault Weapon' ban that has almost zero chance of happening.

I guess I can understand it a bit. I got caught off guard during the Clinton era ban and overpaid for some items too. I had only been into guns a few years then and not into 'Black' guns at all. I remember paying $200 for a stripped AR-15 receiver when just before that you could pick them up all day long for $80. There is a big difference though. When I bought that receiver it was because I wanted to build and shoot a gun that I thought I would never have another chance to own. But I'm betting a guy that pays $5000+ for a SCAR has no intention of shooting it, might not want it at all. I bet that deep down he is really hoping that some gun legislation will be passed, so he can resale later at a hefty profit. The scum would gladly give our freedoms away to make a little money.

I won't be selling mine even though I could right now and easily double my money. I made the decision to buy this rifle because it had the features I wanted. It was the best tool for the job. That hasn't changed no matter how much it's worth.

Sad

Saddened to her about the recent loss of William The Coroner. I wasn't a regular reader of his blog but I did pop in every once in a while to check out his unique look on things. I also remember him from some gun forums we both belonged to. He obviously made many friends in the gun world, you can see them all over the net. RIP - Way too young to go.

A question

How come the only time Kentucky makes the national news is with the Derby, basketball or nutcakes like THIS? He ain't even one of ours. Just asking.

Flip the switch!

Yesterday a storm came through my region of the country leaving numerous downed trees and communities without power before it was quickly gone again. In Indiana some people even lost their lives when a concert stage collapsed. But for me and my neighborhood it was nothing more than an annoyance, 23 hours without modern conveniences just as a reminder that life after electricity is really going to suck.

Really sad to hear

Just read today where actress and singer Yvette Vickers' body was discovered in her home back on April 27th. She would have been 83 this coming August. Her body was described as "mummified" and evidently she could have been dead for nearly a year before being discovered. Yvette never was a big star but I loved those campy "B" movies she appeared in. She also held a special place in my heart for another reason (See below). I was truly shocked to read this news and I'm saddened that anyone would have to die like this. It's just hard to believe that this lady could be dead in her house for that long and not one person, not a neighbor or even the mailman could be bothered to check in on her in all that time. Just sad.

The following tribute to Yvette was posted on my original website jwilsonsworld on 5/17/2004.

The year was 1972; my friend Bobby and I were secretly looking through his father's old copies of Playboy magazine. I opened the July 1959 issue and my eyes fell upon this provocative beauty. She was nude! Not only was she nude but she also seemed to be quite happy about it (which was completely contrary to my southern Baptist upbringing). Looking back today, her nudity seems mild, almost innocent. In these modern times you can see more nudity on prime time television, but in 1972 to a very young and impressionable boy it was rather exotic and exciting. Much later on I discovered "Miss July 1959" actually had a real name and was a real person, her name was Yvette Vickers. Yvette Vickers is a cult movie star today, best known for films like Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Attack of the Giant Leeches, Reform School Girl and Juvenile Jungle. These movies (and Yvette Vickers' acting) are better than their titles would suggest, in fact they are really good and very entertaining. Watching these movies you can see the talent this woman has and the extra special something inside her that could have made her a really big star if someone would have given her a chance. I don't guess Hollywood really ever gave her that big chance, that's too bad for Hollywood and especially too bad for us movie fans, I think she would have been great.

Thank you Yvette, wherever you are, for giving a little boy his first look at a "real" naked lady and a grown man a very fond childhood memory.

Pay Your Taxes!

Yes another income tax day is upon us friends! In these times of want, with federal, state and local governments all seeing drastic declines in incoming revenue, it is important that all of us (that actually pay taxes) pay our fair share. As for me I got back a little at the federal level but was shocked! SHOCKED! SHOCKED! to discover that I had under paid my state taxes last year and actually owed them $5! Well, I immediately got a check off (yesterday) with the hope that my contribution might keep my state running a little while longer. I guess a five spot is probably just enough to cover the cost of a couple sheets of copier paper, or maybe a paper clip...

Miserable - Thieving - BastardsLast night at work I bought a Coke and got this little surprise back in my change. Someone had actually gone thru the trouble of grinding down a penny so that they could fool the vending machine into thinking it was a dime. Maybe I am naïve in the ways of the world but when I first saw this I just couldn't believe that someone would go thru this much effort to steal 9 cents. Yes, maybe I am that naïve...
